From an industry standpoint, nuclear power is already an established reality, and looks to be poised to grow as American business seeks a way to focus on new sources of energy. Already, America boasts over 100 nuclear reactors in 31 states, responsible for the production of 806 billion kilowatt-hours of energy in 2007 alone.
That number is good for 19% of America’s national energy production, better than the world average of 18%, but still a long way behind worldwide leaders such as France, Belgium, and Sweden, who obtain 78%, 60%, and 43% respectively of their energy needs from nuclear plants.
The move to nuclear makes sense on many levels. Financially, nuclear power is a clear winner, with a cost per kilowatt hour of a mere 1.76 cents. That’s over three times as cheap as the cost of a kilowatt hour generated from fossil fuel. For the economy at large, more factories means more jobs, and cheaper energy means factories in other industries remain competitive in a global market dedicated to squeezing profits from ever-tightening budgets.
